Here are some ways you can avoid your pet geting heat stroke:

1. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR!!!  Even on cooler days your car can reach extrememley high temperatures and it only takes a matter of minutes for your pet to get overheated.

Leave your pet at home or with someone.
Humidity interferes with your pet's ability to eliminate body heat, thereby raising the risk of heat stroke in animals.

2. Always make sure your pet stays hydrated when you travel.  Bringing along water is a good idea.

3. Avoid excessive activity on humid and extra hot days.  That means no taking walks, jogs, or runs.

4. Do not leave your dog outside without access to water, and sufficient shade.

5. Do not lock pet in cage outside or chained in yard in the hot sun.

 6. Even swimming in water above 75 degrees farenheight can overheat your dog

7. Be extra careful with dogs prone to heat stroke.
Dogs prone to heat stoke: Age (older dogs and puppies), Brachiocephalic (dogs with pugged noses), dogs with long hair (example: Goldens), overweight pets (extra layers of fat act as insulation), and sickly pets.

8. Do not waste time trying to force your pet to drink water when symptoms start occurring, immediately bring your pets to a veterinarian.

SYMPTOMS:
Panting
hyperventilation
Salivation early then dry gums as heat protration sets in
Staring
Anxious expression
Refusal to obey commands
Warm, Dry Skin
High Fever
Rapid Heartbeat
Vomiting
Diarrhea and sometimes bleeding
Collapse

9. At first signs of serious heat distress, cool the dog immediately with cool or tepid water but NOT REALLY COLD WATER.  You don't want your pet going into shock.

10. If ice packs are available, apply ONLY to areas where circulation is very good, such as "armpits", stomach or neck.

AFTER APPLYING COOL WATER, TURN A FAN ON DIRECTLY AT YOUR PET TO HELP WITH COOLING.
